Perfect Ways to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

By Mariah Bourne

Hispanic Heritage Month is right around the corner! It's the perfect time to learn more about Hispanic and Latinx history and culture. And, of course — support Hispanic and Latinx-owned businesses!

History of Hispanic Heritage Month

In the United States, Hispanic Heritage Month is a time for celebrating the achievements, culture, and history of Americans with Spanish, Mexican, Caribbean, Central, and South American roots. It began in 1968 as a weeklong celebration and was extended to a month-long celebration from September 15th to October 15th in 1988. These dates coincide with the national independence days of many Latin American countries such as El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Chile, and Belize.

Best Ways to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

There are countless ways you can celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in your community. Some of our favorites include:

  • Learning about Latinx culture and history
  • Attending local events
  • Supporting local Latinx-owned businesses

Learning About Latinx Culture and History

Learning about the culture and history of others allows you to have better interactions with the people around you. Some ways to spend Hispanic Heritage Month learning about the rich history and culture of Latinx and Hispanic communities include:

  • Listening to media and podcasts from Hispanic and Latinx creators
  • Watching films and documentaries highlighting the Latinx experience
  • Visiting museums dedicated to Hispanic and Latinx history
  • Reading books from Latinx authors and poets

Attending Local Events

Participating in parades, concerts, pop-up shops, and food fairs allows you to immerse yourself in Hispanic and Latinx culture. If your community lacks in-person experiences, you can always check out virtual events. Explore well-known landmarks from the comfort of your home by taking a virtual tour!

Supporting Local Hispanic and Latinx-owned Businesses

Giving back to Hispanic and Latinx-owned businesses is one of the best ways to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and support the community. But, don’t limit yourself to only supporting Latinx-owned businesses during Hispanic Heritage Month!

When you buy brands from local communities, you not only get the chance to try out unique products — you provide economic opportunities in communities that are commonly underrepresented or underserved.

Latinx-owned Businesses to Support

At Good Food Brands, you can shop from brands created by women and minorities. All of our featured brands are better for your health and the community. Here are some great brands from Latinx-owned businesses to try out this Hispanic Heritage Month!

Siete Foods

Siete Foods offer grain and gluten-free versions of traditional Mexican staple foods — but you’d never know the difference! Veronica Garza was dedicated to eradicating major health challenges in her family and began making grain-free tortillas as a result. Now everyone can enjoy them along with her delicious chips, salsas, and seasonings.

Perfy

A common issue with soda is the excessive sugars and additives. Vasa Martinez created Perfy to address that issue. With less than 5 grams of sugar in each flavor, Perfy isn’t your average soda. It’s enhanced with nootropics, adaptogens, and L-theanine, along with healthy spices like turmeric. Perfy is equally as delicious as it is healthy!

Nopalera Soap

Nopalera Soap was created to celebrate and elevate Latinx culture. Handmade with plant butters, oils, and nopal cactus, this soap is a representation of the beauty of Mexican culture that will leave your skin soft and moisturized.
